Smart Mom Jewelry: Review & Giveaway

CLOSED
What do an eye for style, even if you're a mom, and a great big heart for charity have to do with each other? That's right. Smart Mom Jewelry.

If you've been following my blog very long, or maybe following me on Twitter, you might have read somewhere that Snapdragon has this whole growing thing down to a science. The kid has put on a pound a week for the last month! Well, as it goes with size, it goes with teeth apparently, and not too long ago I noticed the tell-tale change in his saliva (ouch), a new found propensity to drool (ew), and a sudden love of gnawing (ouch-er). That's right. Snapdragon thinks he needs to be worrying about teeth. First I got a little panicky, what with the whole breastfeeding thing, the idea of a teething infant made me a little nervous. Then I realized that so long as he has something approved for gnawing, other than my wrap carrier and the girls, that it should be all good. But who wants to play baby's favorite game? You know, the one where they pick something up, chew on it, then throw it on the ground just to watch you pick it up for them, over and over and over and over again. Yeah, not this mama. I was on the hunt for a solution.

Then I read about Teething Bling, the awesome product of Smart Mom Jewelry, and I thought "this is quite possibly the simplest yet most brilliant baby related idea I've come across, possibly ever." So, I got in touch with Amy, one of the brilliant moms behind Smart Mom Jewelry, and I learned something cool about what she and her business partner Kendra do that really sets them apart from other mompreneurs.

Amy told me that they are very charity minded. Kendra Kendra, had a child born with cancer so curesearch.org - a pediatric cancer research organization - is one of their partners. Also, Amy's clothing designer Sister-in-Law, Maria, died just a week after giving birth, so in her memory, Smart Mom Jewelry works with Dress for Success to help disadvantaged women.

Smart Mom Jewelry also is a very mom-centric business. In their efforts to create meaningful employment opportunities, their workspace has a huge playroom so that children can play while mom works nearby. I always think it's wonderful to hear about employers who respect the mother-child bond and go out of their way to make sure the needs of the family are met, as opposed to just meeting production needs. I'm not sure if their charitable work or their approach to the work day impressed me more.

As for their product. I do have one major complaint.

My ten year old doesn't believe it's a teether and insists that she should be allowed to wear it. It's not as if she hasn't already lost 1/3 of my jewelry already.

But seriously, I really am loving the Teething Bling.

The pendant disk is much firmer than I'd imagined, and I like it. It feels just the right kind of substantial that I don't find myself thinking that I'm wearing a baby toy. Better still, it looks like jewelry. I've been wearing the heck out of my bronze donut pendant, and people have been surprised to find out that it really is okay for Snapdragon to be chewing on it- and that's what it's for.

The cord has a breakaway clasp on it, so if baby tugs too hard, it comes open, no harm, no foul. This seems to be the hallmark of "mommy" jewelry of all sorts, and I like it. It's super easy to reclasp if He-Man, er, I mean Snapdragon yanks it off of me, and I don't have to worry that we're going to get oddly tangled or that I'm going to be left with nasty red marks after a particularly enthusiastic pulling fest.

I was pleased to read that Teething Bling® products are non-toxic, phthalate, BPA, PVC and lead free. They're also latex-free and dishwasher safe. I don't know about you, but that means a lot to me. The teether I got at my baby shower was shortly thereafter recalled due to a contaminant in the gel inside. I am glad to know that these aren't gel filled, and the silicone out of which they're cast has been tested for the toxic nastiness that have become something of a Bogeyman for me.

So the verdict? I really really like the Teething Bling.

Snapdragon likes it to, though he's somewhat more likely at the moment to try to gum the cord and look at the pendant, he's 4 months old, so I can't really fault him or the Bling for that.

And because I know you'll wonder. Yes, you can pop it in your freezer. No, you probably don't want to, unless you're really hot. I did this today out of curiosity, and man, unless your goal is to introduce your child to the idea of cold breastmilk, I don't suggest it. That said, it also warms up fairly quickly too. But the freezer for a couple hours didn't spell calamity, just FYI.

What's that? You want one?
All right, you twisted my arm. Here's how you can have your own little bit of Teething Bling heaven.

I'd like the Brown Snowflake Donut Shaped Pendant. Just a couple of days ago my daughter was playing with my necklace- even at 17 months. I once tried to make a nursing necklace, but it didn't turn out well- a nice one would be nice.

i like the Malachite Donut Shaped Pendant. I would like to win this so that my 9mo old daughter could hold and play with it instead of me while nursing. My neck and chest is covered in bruises, from my not so sweet baby's fingers

Z has 2 teeth now and bites me all the time, so this would serve as a distraction during nursing and give him something to chew on the rest of the day too. I like candy apple, because it matches my shoes. Or black is cool...or Jade would match his amber teething necklace. Hmm....they all look cool. LOL

I'd like to win because my little guy likes to pull on things while he is nursing and generally that is my hair or my skin. This is becoming rather painful.

I LOVE the Green Camouflage Donut Shaped Pendant! It reminds me of my DH's desert BDUs! =)

I would love to win because this seems like such a wonderful product. It would solve all my nursing and teething woes. My little guy can use it as a teether when I am holding him and as a distraction for when we are nursing in public (better the this than our cover!) Plus, I could actually wear jewelry again! =)

Extra entry....

Laundromats are NOT fun. Right before Hubby and I got married, we had no dryer. So I washed, everything, and just set it aside to run up to dry.
I had 5 tubs full of clothes. Only to get to the laundromat, and they were working on it, so no electric.

We had to hang everything around the house, and take a few of the tubs to the waaay more expensive one.

My favorite one is "rooter skunk". My hubby uses it instead of the "f" word now. Doesn't really mean anything but it sounds silly coming out.

Anna said...

Well, I haven't been to the laundry mat in a long time, but my new favorite website to waste time on is http://peopleofwalmart.com/
It has some pretty entertaining pictures to keep you busy for a few minutes.

Okay, it's not great, but we call people tourons a lot.

Sorry for any typos...on the blackberry. When we were first stationed in CA we only had a dryer. DH would be in the field for days at a time and would need to take the clothes to the laundromat. So me and my pregnant self would cram as many clothes as I could into a tall basket! I would take my book and wash our clothes. Well, silly me, wet clothes are much heavier and don't fit as nicely into that lone basket as dry clothes do. So I would heave and ho and drag that 900 pound (well, it felt like that much) clotehs basket back to the car, take them home, and dry em. The first offer we got for a handmedown washer I took it! =)
